The annual recognition ceremony was held on May 30th for the 19 students in the Eighth Grade class of Saint Mary Catholic School. We recognized those students for their role in having the US flag properly flown throughout the school year. The ceremony also symbolically transfers that responsibility onto those who will take their place in the coming school year (the current Seventh Grade students).
The Assembly was represented by five Sir Knights. The audience for the ceremony was the Upper School (sixth through eighth grade students) and held for the first time in The Upper Room. Our Color Guard conducted the Passing of the Colors and ceremonially folded the flag as teacher Mr. Price and Mrs. Smith read the story about the folds of the flag. As recognition of the Eighth Grade students, each student was awarded a certificate and a US flag lapel pin acknowledging their service through the year. The certificates were distributed by Seminarian Omeed Huemiller assisted by Mrs. Smith, with the student names were announced by Mr. Price, and the lapel pins were presented by Principal Joe Poletti.
The Wilmington National Cemetery is the setting for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony sponsored by the New Hanover County Veterans Council. While the ceremony fits with the motto "Some Gave All, All Gave Some", the solemn part of the ceremony is the reading of the names of New Hanover County veterans that died in the past year. That number this year was 561. The reading alone took almost 30 minutes while it rained on the readers!
The 2024 ceremony featured retired Coast Guard Admiral Karl Schultz as the guest speaker. Retired four-star Admiral Schultz last served on active duty as the 26th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard from June 2018 to June 2022. His speech was excellent.
The assembly placed a memorial wreath among those of other patriotic, veteran, and service organizations.
The annual recognition ceremony was held on May 21st for the 69 students in the Eighth Grade class of Saint Mark Catholic School. We recognized those students for their role in having the US flag properly flown throughout the school year. The ceremony also symbolically transfers that responsibility onto those who will take their place in the coming school year (the current Seventh Grade students).
The Assembly was represented by six Sir Knights Faithful Navigator Frank Bio, Greg Decker, George Schadt, Steve Hargett, Bob Gabel and Cary Newman. The audience for the ceremony was the Third through Eighth grade. Our Color Guard conducted the Passing of the Colors and ceremonially folded the flag as teacher Mr. Kobosko read the story about the folds of the flag. As recognition of the Eighth Grade students, each student was awarder a certificate and a US flag lapel pin acknowledging their service through the year. The certificates were distributed by Chaplain SK Deacon Jolly, and the lapel pins were presented by Principal Tripp Burton.
We want to thank Dean of Students Christine Quinn for the fine job of organization so this ceremony proceeded with all the dignity it deserved.

On hand to greet the returning Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area on April 20 were members of our assembly (Frank Bio, Larry Greer, Steve Patterson and John Bolger). We particularly honored one of our own veterans that was on the Honor Flight -- Navy veteran and Sir Knight Charlie Backes.
Our assembly provided a Color Guard to raise the colors at the opening of the 2024 Saint Mark Festival. While other Sir Knights were busy flipping burgers for the attendees and others providing safety monitoring, five Sir Knights (Larry Greer, Mike Alexander, Bob Gabel, Steve Hargett and Greg Decker) did the honors of raising the American flag.

We joined our brother assembly, the Fr. Thomas F. Price Assembly 3952, in marching in the annual Saint Patrick's Parade through downtown Wilmington. Seven sir knights from our assembly joined the four representing the Hampstead assembly.
The assembly was at the Ashley House with a dinner again; this time Sunday, March 3.
The theme for this event was Casserole and Chili Dinner with Salads and Desserts.
